After an incredible grassroots effort from millions of people across the country, Betsy DeVos was narrowly confirmed as the Secretary of Education, Tuesday, February 7th. Her confirmation happened only after Vice President Mike Pence broke the 50 – 50 tie, the first time in U.S. history such a step has been needed to approve a Cabinet nominee. In fact, the bipartisan Senate rejection is a signal that there is no mandate for a Trump / DeVos education agenda in the Senate.
Every Democratic senator voted NO on DeVos, along with Republican senators Lisa Murkowski (AK) and Susan Collins (ME).
During this confirmation process, students and educators across the country let the Trump administration and U.S. Senate that they will fight for the right of every student to have the opportunity for a great public education. That broad, bipartisan group of Americans will not go away, and will not be silent when any effort to undermine or dismantle public education occurs.
For today, we thank you for the incredible advocacy that forced this historic vote, and sent a clear signal that the Trump / DeVos agenda has no significant support.
