Every day, NEA members see the real impact our broken immigration system is having on their students, families, and communities. Our nation’s educators believe that aspiring Americans deserve the promise of freedom and the opportunity that immigration reform should provide.
While new challenges are likely to emerge in the 115th Congress and new Administration, NEA calls upon Congress to work together to protect our nation’s aspiring Americans. As a nation of immigrants, how we treat immigrants reflects our commitment to the values that define us.
NEA supports commonsense immigration reforms that:
- Address the millions of student and young adult who were brought to the U.S. as children by their parents. America is strengthened by holding onto our DREAMer students who have or are eligible for DACA (Deferred Action Upon Childhood Arrival), and who love our country and consider it home, and are contributing to its prosperity.
- Preserves family unity. Growing numbers of public school students live in fear that our nation’s immigration policies will break up their families, forcing them to choose between their country and their mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers.
- Create a realistic path to citizenship for aspiring citizens who call America home and ensure a fair process that takes into consideration what these new Americans contribute to our country.
The NEA is deeply committed to supporting our educators, students, families, and community who support immigrant students and their educational endeavors.
