On Wednesday, House Democrats overwhelmingly chose Nancy Pelosi as their nominee for Speaker of the House — the vote was 203-32. The full House will vote Jan. 3. In other leadership elections, Democrats chose Steny Hoyer of Maryland as majority leader, James Clyburn of South Carolina as majority whip, Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico as assistant leader, and Hakeem Jeffries of New York as caucus chair. Republicans elected Kevin McCarthy of California minority leader. Democrats gained 40 seats in the mid-terms elections, for a total of 235 Democrats and 200 Republicans in the House of Representatives in the 116th Congress. On the Senate side, Mitch McConnell of Kentucky will remain majority leader and Chuck Schumer of New York minority leader.
